We are going to list the signs of a faulty thermostat below so you know what to look for in your diesel truck.

Corrosion on the Housing

One of the first signs that the thermostat needs to be replaced is if there is corrosion on the thermostat housing. This corrosion is caused by a slow leak in the thermostat that is forming a pool of coolant around the housing. Naturally, when the liquid coolant meets the metal housing, it starts to eat through it. Consequently, if your diesel truck’s thermostat has a slow leak, the housing will be corroded and rusty. The best course of action is to replace the thermostat now before you have…

Coolant on the Garage Floor

Coolant that is leaking out of the engine and onto the garage floor is a sign that the coolant has had its way with the metal housing and eaten through it. Consequently, this is a much larger coolant leak that can cause your diesel engine to overheat. Even if you add coolant to the engine, the level will remain low because the coolant will continue to leak out of the thermostat. Again, it is best to replace the thermostat that is leaking so you no longer lose coolant out of the engine.

Unpredictable Temperatures

Your diesel engine may also start to operate at unpredictable temperatures because the thermostat is malfunctioning. The engine will get hot until the thermostat releases coolant to reduce the temperature. If you see the temperature gauge on the dashboard moving up and down, this is a sign that the engine is not getting the coolant at the right times. This is on the thermostat.

Constant Overheating

Finally, a malfunctioning thermostat can cause your diesel truck’s engine to overheat whenever you drive it. This can cause additional engine damage including a cracked head gasket or engine block. A diesel engine that is overheating constantly should not be driven.
