Are Diesel Engines Really As Fuel-Efficient As Hybrids?

Diesel engines today are nothing like they were decades earlier. Due to state regulations, diesel engines are much cleaner than they used to be. They’ve always had better gas mileage than gasoline engines, but it’s possible that no one anticipated that some diesel engines can be as fuel-efficient as hybrid vehicles. United Diesel Repair isn’t surprised, however. One of the things that makes these engines so remarkable is their ability to generate power using less fuel.

In Some Cases, Yes!

Generally speaking, diesel engines are 30 percent to 35 percent more efficient than gasoline engines are, which puts them in line with many hybrid vehicles. If you drive an older diesel, you may not get quite that fuel efficiency, but you will still get better fuel economy than if you drove a gasoline engine in most cases. Both diesel and hybrid technology are changing at the speed of light, so we imagine fuel-efficiency will remain neck-in-neck for years or even decades to come.

Fuel-Efficiency

One of the reasons why diesel engines can compete with hybrid engines is the diesel fuel itself. Diesel fuel is thicker than gasoline is, and it produces more energy per gallon than gasoline does. This rates diesel fuel higher in its energy-density. This is what makes diesel automobiles so fuel-efficient. You actually get more miles per gallon in a diesel automobile than you do in a gasoline automobile, which is why these engines can compete with hybrid technology.

Cleaner Emissions

Diesel engines are also improving in terms of their emissions. One reason why is that stricter state restrictions have actually made it impossible to drive a diesel automobile in some states. A diesel engine will release exhaust just as a gasoline engine does, but modern diesel engines tend to be much cleaner in their emissions than older diesel engines are. Checking the specifications of the diesel automobile that you want to buy and comparing it with hybrid specifications will give you a comparison.

Continued Engineering

As we said above, the engineering behind diesel engines is changing at the speed of light. Modern automobile technology strives to make vehicles more fuel-efficient and less harmful to the environment. This includes diesel engine engineering and manufacturing. For many drivers, diesel engines are more economical than vehicles powered by gasoline because the diesel fuel is less expensive, gets more miles to the gallon, and provides more power for the engine.
