Signs I’ve Blown My Diesel Truck’s Head Gasket

United Diesel Repair is here to help if you have blown your truck’s head gasket. We recommend that you avoid driving your diesel truck if you suspect that the head gasket is cracked. Rather, call us for a tow to our shop so you avoid damaging the engine further. Below, we are going to list the signs that the head gasket is cracked and hemorrhaging coolant and oil.

Low Engine Coolant

When the head gasket blows, pressurized coolant sprays all over the engine. It also leaks into the cylinder block and mixes with the motor oil that is leaking, as well. The head gasket prevents these fluids from making their way into the cylinder block. Unfortunately, the hemorrhaging coolant is going to reduce the coolant level circulating through the diesel engine.

Overheating Engine

Naturally, this is going to cause the engine to overheat. This is one reason why we recommend that you avoid driving your diesel truck. There’s no way you will be able to operate the vehicle without the engine running too hot. As the engine’s temperature increases, you run the risk of cracking the exhaust manifold or gasket, as well, and also cracking the cylinder block.

Coolant That Boils

The coolant will also start to boil in the engine if you keep operating the diesel truck. This is because the temperature has reached critical mass and heated up the coolant to the boiling point. When the engine is this hot, the radiator cap is going to blow. Again, do not drive your diesel truck if the engine is so hot that the coolant is boiling. This makes driving the truck very dangerous.

White Exhaust Smoke

Another sign that the head gasket is blown in the engine is hemorrhaging coolant is white exhaust smoke flowing out of the tailpipe. This is the color the exhaust turns when the engine is burning away the coolant. Because your engine is overheating, you may also see white smoke floating out from underneath your diesel truck’s hood. Your truck is way too hot.

Milky Motor Oil

Finally, the other reason why we recommend you avoid driving your diesel truck if you suspect that the head gasket is blown is that the coolant and motor oil are mixing. This dilutes the motor oil and causes it to be ineffective as it circulates through the engine. Between the excess engine heat and the diluted motor oil, you will damage the engine possibly beyond repair if you drive the truck.
