Symptoms of a Faulty Water Pump in My Diesel Truck

Come to United Diesel Repair if your diesel truck is doing any of the following, whether it is a light-duty, heavy-duty, or big rig truck. The following are signs that the water pump has gone bad and needs to be replaced. If you’ve got over 100,000 miles on your diesel truck’s odometer, the water pump is more likely to go bad. For those who don’t keep their diesel trucks for long, you may never need to worry about the water pump. For those who do keep their diesel trucks for years, the following are signs of a faulty water pump.

Corroded Pump

Corrosion on the pump is an indication that the water pump has started to leak slowly. The fluid that the pump leaks is the engine’s coolant. Unfortunately, a slow leak can go undetected for a long period of time because all the coolant does is pool around the pump. This is what causes corrosion on the pump housing.

Leaking Coolant

Eventually, you will realize that your diesel truck is leaking coolant because there will be coolant on the garage floor. This is a sign that the corrosion has eaten through the water pump and cause a larger leak. Naturally, you do not want to drive your diesel truck if the engine does not have enough coolant in it to keep the temperature below the maximum threshold.

Poor Circulation

Driving the engine without enough coolant will overheat it, as will a water pump that can no longer circulate the coolant through the engine. When this happens, the temperature gauge on the dashboard will rise into the red zone very quickly. Bring your diesel truck to our shop so we can test the coolant circulation to see if the water pump is functioning.

Grinding Noises

One sign that it isn’t is grinding noises coming from the engine. The water pump will make these noises when it starts to malfunction. The noise may sound like grinding or growling, and you will hear the noise coming from the front of your diesel truck’s engine.

Overheating Engine

Finally, all of the above is going to make the diesel truck overheat while you are driving it. Unfortunately, it will overheat every time that you drive it. This is definitely an indication that the water pump has gone bad and needs to be replaced.
