Diesel Engine Problems That Occur Quite Often

We come across common problems every day and, guess what? We fix them! Here are diesel engine problems that occur quite often.

Black Exhaust

Black exhaust might seem odd on this list considering that all diesel engines release a small amount of black exhaust every time you step on the accelerator. Excess black exhaust is not normal, however, and it is an indication that you’ve got a problem brewing underneath the hood. Usually, the problem is caused by too much fuel in the air/fuel mixture due to a sensor failure that releases too much fuel.

Contaminated Fuel

Diesel fuel is more viscous than gasoline is, and, consequently, it can become contaminated much easier. Dirt, bacteria, soot, and water can all contaminate your diesel engine’s fuel and cause performance issues and severe damage. It’s important to have any diesel engine problems, including starting problems, checked right away to ensure your fuel is not contaminated.

Glow Plugs

The glow plugs are what fire up your diesel engine. They are basically a diesel engine’s spark plugs. These plugs last longer than spark plugs do because they are only used when you turn on your diesel vehicle; spark plugs continue to fire in a gasoline engine while the engine is running. Defective glow plugs can make starting your diesel difficult, or you won’t be able to start it at all.

Humidity

It can get pretty humid here in Flowery Branch, Georgia, and humidity can affect your diesel engine. In fact, it can damage it. Excess hydration increases oxidation and, thereby, rust, and it also attacks any fluid additives found in the engine. Humidity can also reduce your diesel engine’s lubrication process. If this happens, you could be facing a seriously-damaged diesel engine.

Oil Oxidation

If you don’t drive your diesel regularly, your oil might oxidize. This happens when air gets into the oil and affects the oil’s ability to lubricate the engine. The air bubbles interfere with the lubrication and, consequently, as with the humidity discussed above, it can seriously damage your engine. It’s important to have your oil changed regularly to ensure it has not oxidized.

Finally, bring your vehicle into United Diesel Repair in Flowery Branch, GA, if it is making a ton of noise. Even though diesel engines are noisier than gasoline engines, you should not hear excess noise or knocking sounds. If you do, there’s a problem.
